Keeping Pets Cool

July 7, 2018

Summer can be a stressful time for  your pet. Here are some tips to keep your pup cool and safe:

  • Never, ever leave your dog in the car.

You know this. It can kill your dog in less than 15 minutes if the temperature is over 80 degrees. Don't do it.

  • Time your dog walks for the coolest time of day and the coolest part of town.

Your dog may be a stud athlete but don't test his endurance during the summer. Walk in the early morning or at sunset when it is cooler and remember to bring water. Be especially careful with snub-nosed dogs like pugs or bulldogs or elderly dogs. They have to work harder at breathing in the heat.

  • Keep your house cool when away.

You may get to spend the day in an air conditioned office but your pets are home alone during the hottest time of day. Keep windows open and/or air conditioning going.

  • Be aware of hot pavement or sand.

If it is hot on your hand it is hot on their feet. Look into booties if your pet must walk on overheated surfaces or stay in the shady part of the street.

  • Keep an eye out for heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

Heatstroke, which can have these symptoms:

Heavy panting

Heavy drooling

Trouble breathing

Rapid heartbeat

Dark or red gums and tongue

If you see any signs, get him to the vet right away.
